Aston Villa’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, recently shared his thoughts on the situation of Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, suggesting that the young keeper should consider moving to a club where he feels more appreciated. Ramsdale, who has fallen out of favor at Arsenal following the arrival of David Raya last summer, has seen limited playing time since then.

Mikel Arteta’s decision to bring in Raya was initially met with widespread debate, but it ultimately proved successful, as Raya went on to win the Premier League Golden Glove for the 2023/24 season. Ramsdale, once the starting goalkeeper for Arsenal, now finds himself linked with several clubs, including Chelsea, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and Southampton.

Southampton, who had been contemplating a move for the England international, have reportedly shifted their focus to Justin Bijlow of Feyenoord. Wolves, on the other hand, are not in urgent need of a new goalkeeper but might consider upgrading their current option, José Sá, if the right opportunity arises.

In an interview discussing Ramsdale’s future at Arsenal, Martinez, a former Arsenal goalkeeper himself, suggested that a move to a club like Wolves could be beneficial for Ramsdale. Martinez acknowledged that Ramsdale signed for Arsenal with high expectations and had established himself as the club’s number one keeper. However, he emphasized the importance of Ramsdale finding a team where he feels valued, especially considering his talent and potential to be a key player for England’s national team.

Martinez also reflected on Aston Villa’s ambitions, noting that while the club secured a fourth-place finish last season and qualified for the Champions League, he doesn’t believe they can realistically challenge Manchester City or Arsenal for the Premier League title this season. He pointed out that the team had sold some key players, which could make it more challenging to compete at the highest level. Instead, Martinez suggested that Villa might focus on a strong cup run, perhaps aiming to win the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, it appears that Southampton is set to sign Justin Bijlow from Feyenoord, rather than pursuing Ramsdale. Bijlow, who had been Feyenoord’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2023/24 season, saw his playing time reduced due to injuries and has since lost his starting position to Wellenreuther. According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Southampton and Feyenoord have reached a verbal agreement for Bijlow’s transfer, with the final details being ironed out before the Dutch goalkeeper flies to England for his medical tests.
